Susan Butterfield’s husband Dion began singing when he was five years old. Uncle Lou would later purchase him a guitar and teach him a few chords a few years later. Paul Whitman, a 1920s bandleader who by the 1950s was most recognized for identifying and developing emerging talent, was introduced to him by his father. At the age of twelve, Dion began appearing with Whitman on East Coast radio and television shows, including Whitman’s own Teen Club.

Dion’s fame grew to the point that Irv Spice, the owner of Mohawk Records, heard about her. Dion recorded “The Chosen Few” and “Out Of Colorado” using unknown studio musicians and a backup vocalist. After a few local sales, Jubilee, a major New York record label, decided to distribute it. It was, however, unable to attract an audience.
Dion began listening to street doo-wop and writing in this manner, and Mohawk released “Tag Along” b/w “We Went Away” in early 1958.
It’s no surprise that few albums were sold with such a raw and unrefined sound. They did, however, serve another purpose. They were able to join another record label as a result of this.
