Emily Shalit started her education at Anna C. Scott School and then Dwight School for Girls, both in northern New Jersey. She then went on to college at Indiana University in Bloomington. After college, Emily chose a different path from that of her father.
While his father is known for offering his opinions about plenty of pieces of art for NBC’s “Today,” and has written for such publications as Look magazine and Ladies’ Home Journal, Emily choose a different career path. She was a writer, poet, pianist, and animal rescuer. Per sources, she rarely had fewer than three cats living with her.

Gene Shalit’s daughter also worked the front desk at the Red Lion Inn; became a Kripalu resident in its early years. She worked multiple positions at the Berkshire Public Theater in Pittsfield where the Barrington Stage Company is now located and she helped form a Berkshire support group of Multiple Sclerosis sufferers. Emily Shalit’s group helps the members to exchange views, provide advice, buttress each other’s confidence, and in every way combat the MS scourge.
How did Gene Shalit’s daughter die?
Emily Shalit passed away on November 28, 2012, at the Great Barrington Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. After decades of living with multiple sclerosis, the immediate cause of her passing was revealed to be ovarian cancer, against which she fought heroically for three years. Emily’s mother, Nancy Lewis Shalit also died some years early of cancer in August 1978.
Among Emily’s mourners are her loving husband John Gelpi; her sisters Willa and Amanda; her brothers Peter, Nevin, and Andrew; her father, Gene. It has not been revealed if Emily had any children. As of 2023, Emily’s father, Gene who was born on March 25, 1926, in New York City, is 97 years old.

Her brother defended his father amidst backlash from the Gay community
Emily Shalit’s father was involved in a problem with the gay community after criticizing the film “Brokeback Mountain.” According to Gene, the character of Jake Gyllenhaal was a “sexual predator.” Emily Shalit’s gay brother Peter publicly defended him after the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) asked people to write to NBC to complain about the critic’s characterization. Her brother Peter Shalit is a physician and author who lives in Seattle.
