Nancy Shalit was born in 1929 in the United States of America. She was the daughter of Kassel Lewis and Sylvia Surut Lewis. Nancy was the only child of her parents, she had a brother whose name was Anthony Lewis. Nancy’s brother was a public intellectual and journalist. He was also a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a regular columnist for The New York Times.
Nancy Shalit gained much of her fame from being the wife of the famous retired television personality Gene Shalit. Unfortunately, Gene’s wife passed away at the age of 49 in 1978. She was of Russian Jewish descent.

Nancy Shalit was a mother of Six children
Gene Shalit and his wife Nancy got married in 1950. The lovers exchanged their vows in a beautiful wedding ceremony in the presence of their friends, families, and loved ones. A few years after their marriage was able to produce 6 children including the artist and entrepreneur Willa Shalit.
When Willa was barely in her teens, Nancy was institutionalized for the first of what would become a lifelong series of visits to mental hospitals, leaving Willa who was the second child, and her older brother to help raise their four younger siblings. “Having a family member become ill was an early lesson in empathy,” Willa told CNN.
Another child is Peter Shalit, a physician and recognized authority on gay men’s health and living with HIV. The other children are Emily Shalit, Nevin Shalit, Andrew Shalit, and Amanda Shalit. Gene and Nancy stayed married until her death in August 1978. Gene Shalit was married to Nancy Lewis for 28 years.

How did Gene Shalit’s wife die? Nancy died in August 1978 of Cervical cancer. She was laid to rest in Beth Israel Memorial Park, Cedar Knolls, Morris County, New Jersey, USA per her Findagrave profile. Their daughter Emily also died of ovarian cancer in November 2012. Nancy was not as popular as her husband, Gene shielded the whole family from the public eye.

Gene never got married again after the death of his wife. For much of his career, he lived in Leonia, New Jersey, although as of 2012 he was listed as a resident of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. As of 2023, Gene who was born on March 25, 1926, in New York city, is 97 years old.
