Roberto Escobar was born Roberto de Jesús Escobar Gaviria on January 13, 1947, in Rionegro, Colombia. As of 2023, Roberto is at the age of 76 years. He goes by the nickname El Osito (“the little teddy bear”). He is one of the seven children of his parents, Abel de Jesús Escobar Echeverri and Hermilda de los Dolores Gaviria Berrío.

Roberto Escobar’s father, Abel de Jesús Escobar was a farmer while his mother, Hermilda Gaviria was a teacher. Roberto was the oldest son of his parents. He grew up alongside his six siblings. His siblings are called Luis Fernando Escobar, Alba Marina Escobar, Pablo Escobar, Argemiro Escobar, Luz María Escobar, and Gloria Inés Escobar.

Roberto Escobar’s paternal grandparents are Sara María Echeverri and Pablo Emilio Escobar. His maternal grandparents are Inés Berrío and Roberto Gaviria. Roberto’s childhood experiences have not been disclosed publicly. He reportedly grew up in poverty. Details regarding Roberto’s education are not known.

Roberto’s Role In The Medellín Cartel & Imprisonment

Roberto Escobar was involved with the Medellín Cartel, which was founded and led by his brother Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria also known as Pablo Escobar or “the king of cocaine”. Roberto succeeded his cousin Gustavo de Jesús Gaviria Rivero. Gustavo, a drug trafficker and right-hand man of Pablo Escobar was in control of the Medellín cartel’s finances and trade routes.

Roberto Escobar was the accountant and co-founder of the Medellín Cartel. Roberto was found guilty of drug trafficking and smuggling, and he was arrested in 1991. He was able to escape with his brother Pablo in July 1992. Later, he surrendered to the authorities. Roberto was injured by a letter bomb in his prison cell. While he was still in prison, on December 18, 1993, a letter bomb sent by Los Pepes blinded him in one eye.

The New York Times reported that Roberto Escobar “was rushed to the Las Vegas medical clinic in the south of Medellin after a letter bomb exploded in his cell at the Itagui maximum security prison during visiting hours.” The letter bomb which reportedly arrived by mail addressed to Roberto Escobar, also injured two prison guards.

Roberto is said to have suffered injuries to his face, abdomen, and hands. Roberto had asked prison authorities for protection against possible attacks. However, Roberto spent over 10 years in prison before he was released in 2006.

Roberto’s Other Works

Roberto Escobar Co-Founded Escobar Inc. with Olof K. Gustafsson. He registered Successor-In-Interest rights for his brother in California, United States. In January 2019, he launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to impeach President Donald Trump. Hoping to raise US$50 million in donations for his company Escobar Inc. GoFundMe removed the page shortly after it was posted.

Roberto Escobar spoke to Global News about why he wants to take these steps to impeach Trump. “His discrimination of the Latino American people. We are some of the hardest-working people in the world. Trump is 100-per-cent corrupt and colluding with foreign governments. Trump is like a Chihuahua dog — small and cute but doesn’t know how to bite. I am good at biting,” Roberto told Global News.

“It will help the world. I am going to eliminate Trump from power. I will do it. My brother Pablo killed hundreds of judges and thousands of policemen. But this time we will do it the legal way, peacefully,” Roberto also said. “I know there is enough dirt on this guy. If we pay the right connections, they will come forward and testify in Congress and co-operate with Robert Mueller.”

“Once we raise the $50 million, we believe we have an incredibly high chance of getting Trump removed swiftly from being the president. He has done a lot of wrong and should be held accountable. But of course, it costs money to go against a powerful guy like Trump,” Roberto claimed.

Roberto Escobar wrote “The Accountant’s Story: Inside the Violent World of the Medellín Cartel”. The book is about his experiences working with his brother as an accountant for The Medellín Cartel. Roberto launched a folding phone, the Escobar Fold 1, priced at $349. He claimed the phone will defeat Apple. “I have told many people that I will defeat Apple — and I will”.

Roberto Escobar claimed that the phone can only be destroyed by fire. The Escobar Fold 2 was released two months later. It is reportedly a Galaxy Fold with poorly-added Escobar branding. Many customers, when ordering the phones, said that they never received them, with only tech influencers actually receiving products. In 2020, the company released a refurbished version of the iPhone 11 Pro and allegedly sued Apple for $2.6 billion.

Roberto Escobar has been private about his love life. Not everything is known about his romantic associations but he reportedly got married twice, the second time to a woman identified as Claudia Azcárraga or Escárraga.
