Richard Lincoln Charles was born on 12 February 1923, in Rochester, New York, United States. Son of John Earl and Henrietta (Schott) Charles, a fuel equipment salesman, and a beautician. As a kid, an uncle took him backstage after a Masonic Temple show to meet Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. That was Richard’s first glimpse of show business and it stuck with him for the rest of his life. Graduated from high school at the age of 17, and he studied journalism at the University of Alabama.

In December 1941 while leaving a movie theater he learned Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, Richard joined the U.S. Navy in the hopes of becoming an aviator. He eventually graduated at the top of his class and was sent to San Francisco to await his orders.

During the war, Richard undertook both air-sea rescue work and anti-submarine patrols. Though he was shot down a few times, he still came through safely. He was promoted to lieutenant junior grade and flew missions to Guam, Saipan, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima. Richard and his squadron saved 44 men when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed per Sources

Joyce Randolph was the second woman he married

Joyce Randolph was the second woman Richard took to the altar. His first marriage was with his campus girlfriend, “a beauty queen from Alabama,” His brief first marriage ended in divorce before he turned 30. While Richard Lincoln Charles appeared in advertising campaigns for breweries and cigarette companies, he had the opportunity to meet more show business players. It was at a gathering that the couple first meet. Richard was introduced to his future wife, actress Joyce Randolph, a co-star on The Honeymooners by one of the Show business players.

Joyce Randolph and Richard Lincoln Charles met at the Cordial Bar and Grill, next to CBS-TV Studio 50 (today The Ed Sullivan Theater), after The Honeymooners show on a Saturday night. The two developed a chemistry and Charles asked her out to dinner. On October 2, 1955, the couple decided to take their relationship to another level and they got married.
