Joaquín Guzmán is a Mexican former drug lord and a former leader within the Sinaloa Cartel. He was born Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera but he also goes by the name El Chapo. He is known to have been one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world. He has been referred to as the “biggest drug lord of all time”.
Joaquín Guzmán became a billionaire and with a net worth of about US$1 billion, he was ranked the 10th richest man in Mexico and 1,140th in the world (2011). Forbes ranked him as one of the most powerful people in the world between 2009 and 2013. The Drug Enforcement Administration estimated that he matched the influence and wealth of Pablo Escobar.
How Many Siblings Does Joaquín Guzmán Have?
Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán (4 April 1957) is the son of Emilio Guzmán Bustillos and María Consuelo Loera Pérez. He is not the only child of his parents, he has seven siblings. His siblings are Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera, Arturo Guzmán Loera, Aureliano Guzmán Loera, Bernarda Guzmán Loera, Ovidio Guzmán Loera, Armida Guzmán Loera, and Emilio Guzmán Loera.
El Chapo also had three unnamed older brothers who reportedly passed away of natural causes when he was very young. El Chapo loved his siblings. He was very affectionate towards them. Although he was often beaten up by his father, El Chapo stood up to his father to protect his younger siblings from being beaten. El Chapo’s Brother Miguel Was Arrested
El Chapo’s brother Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera, also known as El Mudo was arrested on June 16, 2005, in Culiacán, Sinaloa. He was charged with the crime of money laundering since it was discovered that he had deposited 17,293,322 pesos in several bank accounts with names. He played a role in the Sinaloa Cartel.

Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera was the one who was in control of buying real estate to be used as safe houses, as well as acquiring vehicles to be used by members of the Sinaloa Cartel. At the time he was arrested, Miguel was celebrating one of his daughter’s 15th birthday. The authorities found a firearm for the exclusive use of the Army, Navy, and Air Force that Miguel was carrying.
In 2008, the Unitary Court of the Second Circuit confirmed the sentence of 13 years and 3 months in prison, in addition to a 2,386-day fine, for the crimes of operations with resources of illegal origin and possession of a firearm. He got his sentence reduced to 11 years, 4 months, and 11 days in prison through legal action after he tried to obtain early release. Miguel was freed after he served his sentence of almost 12 years in prison.
El Chapo’s Brother Arturo Was Brutally Murdered In Prison
Arturo Guzmán Loera, one of El Chapo’s brothers died on 31 December 2004. Arturo who assumed leadership in the Sinaloa Cartel while his brother El Chapo was in prison, was later arrested in a drug trafficking operation. While in prison, he was shot seven times and the bullets lodged in his chest, abdomen, and spinal cord. His death is said to have been a retaliation for the murder of Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes, with Rodolfo’s brother Vicente Carrillo Fuentes ordering the hit.
Federal Forces Team Up To Capture El Chapo’s Brother Aureliano
El Chapo’s brother Aureliano Guzmán Loera, better known as “El Guano” handled an important fraction of the Sinaloa cartel. His drug trafficking organization (DTO), which was under the Sinaloa Cartel, controlled drug smuggling routes from Sinaloa, Mexico, through Sonora, Mexico, and into the United States. There was an operation carried out by the Navy and Sedena in the region of Tamazula, Durango, per a source.

During the operation, ten individuals including Aureliano Guzmán Loera were arrested. The U.S. government had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Aureliano’s capture, a bounty that remains unclaimed. The Mexican Army and Navy were deployed to the area known as El Durazno, a region controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel.
In the operation, which targeted Aureliano, leader of the criminal group, “Los Guanos,” there were at least 200 soldiers and eight helicopters involved. A leaked report from the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) revealed that the Sinaloa Cartel split into four groups following El Chapo’s capture, with Aureliano aka El Guano leading one of them.
