Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera is the brother of Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera. Miguel’s brother is commonly known as “El Chapo”. He is a Mexican former drug lord and a former leader within the Sinaloa Cartel, an international crime syndicate. He is one of the world’s most powerful drug traffickers.

Who Is Joaquín Guzmán’s Brother, Miguel?
Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera was born into the family of Emilio Guzmán Bustillos and María Consuelo Loera Pérez. His date of birth is not known. He didn’t come from a wealthy family but he was born into a poor family. Much is unknown of Miguel’s upbringing but since he is from a poor family, things may have been very difficult for him and his family.
Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera’s father is said to have been a cattle rancher and might have also been a gomero, an opium poppy farmer. Miguel is not the only child of his parents. His siblings are Armida Guzmán Loera, Bernarda Guzmán Loera, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, Arturo Guzmán Loera, Aureliano Guzmán Loera, Ovidio Guzmán Loera, and Emilio Guzmán Loera.
Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera reportedly has three unnamed brothers who had passed away due to natural causes. Miguel’s paternal grandparents are Juan Guzmán and Otilia Bustillos, and his maternal grandparents are Ovidio Loera Cobret and Pomposa Pérez Uriarte. His family lived at La Tuna for many generations. Regarding his education, much is unknown. The schools he attended are unknown.
Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera’s educational qualifications are also not known. It is difficult to tell if he had dropped out of school at some point in time or if he completed high school and college. His father was regularly beating his children. Although his brother Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was regularly beaten by their father, he stood up to his father, protecting his younger siblings from being beaten as well.

It was difficult to get a job in Miguel Ángel’s hometown. His brother El Chapo decided to try the cultivation of opium poppy, which was a common practice among local residents. During harvest season, El Chapo and his brothers hiked the hills of Badiraguato to cut the bud of the poppy. Their father sold the harvest to other suppliers in Culiacán and Guamúchil, the moment the plant was stacked in kilos.
Their father was fond of spending his money on alcohol and women. Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera’s professional details are not known. He has kept his life private. He is believed to have a family of his own although the name of his wife and children are not known. However, Miguel is also known as “El Mudo”.
Miguel Was Arrested In 2005
El Chapo’s brother Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera was arrested for opening many bank accounts with lenders in which he deposited over 17 million pesos. Per a source, he had deposited a total of 17,293,332 pesos and 22 cents, to “hide the presumably illicit origin of said money, the product of drug trafficking”. He was arrested while celebrating his daughter’s 15th birthday.
On June 16, 2005, Miguel Ángel was arrested in Culiacán, Sinaloa. According to him, the accounts were in the name of Lucio Guadalupe Pérez Cano, Gabriel Bernal Castro, Adalberto García Vidana, and/or Miguel Ángel Sánchez Ruíz. At the time of his arrest, a firearm for the exclusive use of the Army, Navy, and Air Force was found by the authorities.
In 2008, the Unitary Court of the Second Circuit confirmed the sentence of 13 years and 3 months in prison, in addition to a 2,386-day fine, against Miguel Ángel for the crimes of operations with resources of illegal origin and possession of a firearm for use exclusive to the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He is said to have tried to get early release but the federal court denied him.
Through legal action, Miguel reportedly got his sentence reduced to 11 years, 4 months, and 11 days in prison. However, Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera regained his freedom. He was released from prison after serving a sentence for money laundering and possession of a weapon, per the Attorney General of the Republic, Raúl Cervantes.

Raúl Cervantes said in an interview with Noticieros Televisa that Miguel was freed after he served his sentence of almost 12 years in prison in Mexico. “Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera was released because he complied with justice,” Raúl said. He also warned that if Miguel gets involved in criminal activities again, he will be investigated by intelligence agencies and will be arrested for a second time.
Miguel Ángel Guzmán Loera was in charge of buying real estate to be used as safe houses and acquiring vehicles to be used by members of the Sinaloa Cartel.
