Wink Martindale is an American disc jockey, radio personality, game show host, and television producer. The Legendary radio and game show host is best known for most game shows telling the judge after he/she answered the specific type of question saying, “Is that acceptable?” whether the answer is correct or not and is known on most of his game shows for telling the audience “No coaching audience, please!” by not shouting out answers when an important question is being asked.

In Martindale’s six-decade career, he is best known for hosting Gambit from 1972 to 1976 (and again from 1980 to 1981), Tic-Tac-Dough from 1978 to 1985, High Rollers from 1987 to 1988, and Debt from 1996 to 1998. Wink started his career as a disc jockey at age 17 at WPLI in Jackson, earning $25 a week.

Wink hosted mornings at WHBQ in Memphis while attending Memphis State University and graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree. On the evening of July 10, 1954, he was showing some friends around the WHBQ studio when he noticed his colleague on the 9 p.m. to midnight shift, Dewey Phillips, was getting a lot of positive feedback from listeners after airing a new song.

The son was Elvis Presley’s first record, “That’s All Right,” which was recorded at Sam Phillips’ recording studio. He took Elvis’ phone number from Sam for an Interview. Elvis’ parents brought him to WHBQ and Dewey Phillips interviewed Elvis without his knowing that he was on the air. According to Martindale, Elvis later admitted that he would have been unable to talk otherwise if he knew he was on air. That was how Wink Martindale and Elvis became friends.

Martindale made his television debut as the host of Mars Patrol, a science-fiction-themed children’s television program, at WHBQ-TV in Memphis. During his time at WHBQ, Martindale hosted the TV show Teenage Dance Party, on which his friend Elvis Presley appeared on June 16, 1956.

In June 1996, the iconic host became the host of Lifetime’s highest-rated quiz show, Debt, which had debt-ridden contestants compete to try to eliminate their debts. Though the show gained lots of popularity on cable, Debt was canceled in 1998, the reason more males were watching the show than females who were the targeted audience.

Aside from being a beloved TV and radio host, Wink is also a family man. He has been married twice and has four children. Wink’s first marriage was to Madelyn Leech. The former lovers were married for 18 years and had four children while together. His second marriage was to Sandy Ferra- Elvis Presley’s ex-girlfriend.
