How did Henry Louis Gates Jr and Sharon Lynn Adams meet?
In 1972, when Sharon was working for Jay Rockefeller’s campaign for governor of West Virginia about which Gates planned to write a book, she met Henry Louis Gates Jr. The couple walked down the aisle in 1979 in a beautiful wedding ceremony in the presence of their friends, families, and loved ones.
He had been involved with her for seven years before they married per reports. The couple’s marriage was blessed with two daughters- Liza and Meggie Gates- before their marriage came to an end in 1999.
Neither the Havard professor nor his ex-wife has revealed the exact reason behind their 20-year marriage coming to an end, however, some people used to make fun of Dr. Gates, Sharon’s husband because they say that it’s funny that one of the most preeminent black scholars in the country cannot find a black wife.
When they were still married, Sharon Lynn Adams and her husband mostly did various activities. In 1995 Gates presented a program in the BBC series Great Railway Journeys (produced in association with PBS).
The program documents a 3,000-mile journey Gates took through Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania, with his then-wife Sharon Adams and daughters Liza and Meggie Gates. Their trip came 25 years after Gates worked at a hospital in Kilimatinde near Dodoma, Tanzania, as a 19-year-old pre-medical student at Yale University.

Sharon Lynn Adams’s husband was mistakenly suspected of trying to break into his own home in 2009. A confrontation by the police resulted in Gates being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Prosecutors later dropped the charges. Talking about the incident, Adams told The State Journal-Register– “I think what transpired was unfortunate and I think when heads manage to cool down there can be a substantial conversation”
Though the former couple seldom in touch, she said she and her ex-husband have exchanged a few brief e-mails since the incident. But Sharon believes too many people without sufficient information have already weighed in on her ex-husband’s arrest. “Everybody who is not directly involved in this awful incident needs to step back. I just feel like too much is being said by people who weren’t involved,” Adams said.
Her Daughter Elizabeth Gates suffered a Stroke
Per CBSNEWS’s 2010 report. the daughter of the prominent Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and his ex-wife Sharon Adams was in her twenties when she suffered a severe stroke. After an evening at a bachelorette party Sharon Lynn Adams’s daughter, Elizabeth Gates woke up with what she thought was a hangover.
“I couldn’t move at all it was horrible. I called my friends in the room. I tried to say, ‘What the hell is going on?’, but all I could say was ‘What?‘” she told the publication. Elizabeth had suffered a stroke and her mind was irreparably harmed, an X-ray showed.
Sharon and her ex-husband were determined to help their daughter recover.”I just wasn’t going to let her be impaired without a fight,” Sharon Adams told the outlet.
Sharon quickly tried to find ways to get her daughter’s speech back. On their trips to the hospital, Sharon pointed out everything from stop signs to streetlamps to help her daughter .”For two solid months just together in the car and identifying objects — just rebuilding her brain,” Sharon said.
“My mom was a genius and got me the (language learning software) English Rosetta Stone,” said Elizabeth who worked as a writer for the popular website The Daily Beast,- “I would spend and hour with a speech pathologist and the rest of the day on Rosetta Stone.”
Just four months after her stroke, Sharon Lynn Adams’s daughter Elizabeth Gate is back at home and back at work too. Her recovery continues to amaze her doctors and family.
