Mary Nancy Restrepo was just 28 years when her husband was killed by the orders of Pablo Escobar. He was 37 years old at the time of the time he died. He was assassinated because of his work as Minister in prosecuting cocaine traffickers mainly belonging to the Medellín Cartel. On April 30, 1984, a few days before Rodrigo and his family were due to travel as Colombian ambassador to Czechoslovakia, considered a country where he would be safe from Pablo Escobar’s assassins.

Rodrigo Lara was in his 1976 Mercedes-Benz W116 when Pablo Escobar’s men- Byron Velasquez and Ivan Dario Guisado drove past his SUV convoy on a Yamaha motorcycle. Guisado shot an Uzi through the window, hitting 14 times.

Lara was killed instantly, but the driver was left unharmed. His bodyguards shot Ivan Dario Guisado dead but Byron Velasquez was arrested and paroled on October 15, 1995. Within a few days after Lara’s assassination, Pablo Escobar and his family fled to Panama.

Lara’s death led to the drug lord’s indictment for murder and a long-running controversy over extradition in Colombia that would ultimately cost thousands of lives.

Nancy Restrepo’s husband was appointed the mayor of his hometown at a young age.

In 1969, when he was only 23 years old, Lara was appointed mayor of his hometown Neiva, Huila, Colombia. This position was later held by his son Rodrigo Armando Lara Sánchez from 2016 to 2019. Lara Sánchez was also the vice presidential candidate of Federico Gutiérrez of the Team for Colombia coalition in the 2022 presidential election, in which they ended in third place.
