Jeffrey Lovell was Four when his father helped avoid disaster aboard Apollo 13

The Apollo 13 which Jeffrey’s father Jim commanded’s malfunction was caused by an explosion and rupture of oxygen tank no.2 in the service module. The explosion ruptured a line or damaged a valve in the no. 1 oxygen tank, causing it to lose oxygen rapidly.

The command module of Apollo 13 entered Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down on Target on April 17. The mission has been referred to as a successful failure, in that all the crew members survived a catastrophic accident. Jeffrey was just 4 years old when this event took place. His father’s heroism was depicted in the movie- Apollo 13 by Tom Hanks as he helped avoid disaster aboard Apollo 13.

The young Jeffrey Lovell didn’t fully understand the danger his father, Jim Lovell, faced aboard Apollo 13 after an oxygen tank explosion forced the crew to abort their trip to the moon for a tense return to Earth, the Houston Chronicle reported.

This is not the first time Jim Lovell’s son has developed an interest in his father’s job. When his father returned from the Apollo 8 mission, the then 3 years old Little Jeffrey insisted to wear his father’s helmet when the family met with newsmen on the successful splashdown of Apollo 8, Friday, Dec. 27, 1968, in Houston, Texas. The boy clearly wanted to follow in the footsteps of his famous father. The Helmet was a Christmas gift from his father.

Jeffrey Lovell and his sister Barbara joined other astronaut’s children at an event that was held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar mission at Space Center Houston, the visitor’s center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2019. “I was born into the space program,” Jeff Lovell told the panel “So, my dad being an astronaut was just like anything else other parents did. It was their normal job.”

Jeffrey Lovell and the three others on the panel admitted that it was hard to be the child of an Apollo astronaut — they often didn’t see their fathers until the weekend and never knew if they were in Houston, in Florida, or in space. But to them, it was normal for the most part, they said. Dad was dad, and being an astronaut wasn’t special.

“Between flights, when the media wasn’t really on us or the families, we were normal,” Jeff Lovell recalled, per ABC13 report. “We were going to the swimming pool. We didn’t lock our doors. It was just a regular, hanging out with the engineers next door, it was a regular, easy going family life.“

“I remember finding a baseball trophy in the basement,” Jeffrey Lovell continued, “and thinking I was going to take it to school and tell everyone my dad was a professional baseball player. I remember thinking that would be really cool.”
