Thomas is the brother of William Reibert Mapother, Sr. Thomas was an electrical engineer. He was married to special education teacher Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer; 1936–2017). Just like his wife Mary, Thomas was from Louisville, Kentucky, and had English, German, and Irish ancestry.

Tom Cruise reunited with his father Thomas at the time he was in the hospital dying of cancer. He said he would only meet his son on the basis that he didn’t ask him anything about the past.
