Mary Lee Pfeiffer was born on the 22 of September 1936 to her parents Charles Conrad Pfeiffer and Comala Rosella Ramser Pfeiffer. She is the sister of Lee Joseph Pfeiffer, Charles Worthington Pfeiffer, Sue Anna Pfeiffer Barrett, and Mary Vernetta Pfeiffer, per sources.

Mary Lee Pfeiffer was from Louisville, Kentucky, and had English, German, and Irish ancestry. Growing up, Mary had an interest in theater. She told Rolling Stone in 1986: “I was always interested in theater, but I never did anything with it. When I was growing up, if you went to Hollywood, that was really risqué.”

Mary was a special education teacher. She got married to electrical engineer Thomas Cruise Mapother III (1934–1984) and they became parents of four: Cass Mapother, Tom Cruise, Lee Ann Mapother, and Marian Mapother. The family lived in Syracuse, New York, and Ottawa, Canada.

Mary Lee Pfeiffer influenced her son Tom Cruise’s desire to pursue an acting career. It was from her that he developed a passion for acting. At a young age, Mary encouraged him to participate in a local theater group. “I guess I was his greatest audience,” she said. “He had it in him then.”

Mary’s husband Thomas took a job as a defense consultant with the Canadian Armed Forces. The family moved in late 1971 to Beacon Hill, Ottawa. For some personal reasons, Mary and Thomas got separated. Mary and her children returned to the United States and she worked a series of jobs to keep her family out of poverty.

The family relocated to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and Mary Lee got married to Jack South in 1978. At age 18, Tom got the blessing of his mother and stepfather before he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. According to Tom, his stepfather loved his mom. “He loved my mother so much that he took us all in, all four young people,” Tom later recalled. Mary’s ex-husband Thomas died of cancer on 9 January 1984.

According to PEOPLE, she was given a memorial service at her local Church of Scientology. Mary’s children Tom Cruise, Lee Ann DeVette, Cass Mapother, and Marian Henry all attended the memorial along with other family and friends.
