The investigation led to the finding of the remains of 10 homicide victims dispersed along Ocean Parkway in New York. Shannan was said to have died by drowning but her mother Mari Gilbert vehemently championed that she was killed by a serial killer. Shannan’s death was known as the Long Island Serial Killer.

An independent autopsy conducted specified possible strangulation. Sherre Gilbert and her mother Mari Gilbert alongside her sibling Sarra often appeared on TV shows, discussing the case. Sherre has been one of the active-leading voices seeking justice for her sister.

What Happened To Her Mother?

Sherre Gilbert’s mother Mari Gilbert was murdered by her daughter Sarra Elizabeth Gilbert. Sarra stabbed her mother to death at her apartment building on Warren Street in Ellenville, New York, on July 23, 2016. Sarra suffered from schizophrenia, with one report declaring that she “had voices in her head telling her to carry out the crime.”

Sarra Elizabeth Gilbert was charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree possession of a weapon, convicted of murder, and penalized to 25 years in jail in August 2017. She is detained in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women.

A year & a half of hope, prayers & dreams. People say I have a tragic life because of my circumstances but one thing is for sure.

I’m blessed to have had you in my life for 22yrs and I’m grateful that you were eventually found. Words can’t even describe the amount of pain and heartache I feel every day for you & mom. They say ‘time heals all wounds’ but I think time only hides it. Until we meet again my dear sister; sleep with mom & the Angels.”
