Sheila Alsina gained much of her public attention from being the mother of August Alsina. Sheila was born in the United States of America but the exact place is unknown. She has her son August in New Orleans, Louisiana. Although no one in her family was involved in music, her son drew inspiration to sing after he watched Lauryn Hill in Sister Act 2. August Alsina’s first music video was uploaded to the internet on YouTube in 2007 when he was just at the age of 14. The video starts with a cover of “Hypothetically” by Lyfe Jennings.
August Alsina and his mother had a feud
With both his father and stepfather battling a crack cocaine addiction, Alsina’s mother Shila moved the singer to Houston, Texas in search of a fresh start and a better life for her children after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Shila’s partner, August Alsina Sr. passed away later. Life in Houston, Texas was not smooth for the mother and son.
Shila and his son had a disagreement and the mother had to make the tough decision of “kicking out” her son. Speaking in a 2015 interview with The Breakfast Club, the singer touched a bit on the status of his relationship with his mother.
August Alsina- said- “My mom is a queen for one reason, she gave me life and she raised me. I can never take that away from my mom. We all have issues,” he explained. “My mom is my mom. I don’t expect people to really understand the situation with my mom and her kids. Sometimes we go years, months without talking to her. “
The singer went on: “I applaud my mom for doing all that she has done for us as a parent, but I think that sometimes the mother side gets pushed to the side. I just imagine me having a kid and my kid being an artist and in a song my child sings ‘I try to buy my mama love she don’t appreciate me.’ My reaction isn’t to go online to explain myself to the world. My reaction is… let me see what’s wrong with my child because I’m the parent and you’re the child. I feel like a regular person to my mom, not her son.”
August Alsina’s statement didn’t sit too well with his mother, Sheila Alsina, who also took to Instagram shortly after to relay her displeasure about what was said. “So I listened to the interview. I was so sadden [sic] by the lies or the road August chose to promote the album,” she wrote as the caption for the now deleted post. “It’s always three sides to the story. How could you call and check on someone that stop talking to you since April?
“August didn’t call me for Mother’s Day, birthday in July,” Sheila Alsina continued. “Passed out, rushed to the hospital in September, didn’t hear from him. It’s so sad that this boy is crying out for help, and his whole team is missing it.”

August Alsina and his mother, Sheila Alsina reunited during the Houston stop of his Don’t Matter tour in 2017. The singer brought his mother onstage and sang to her as they embraced in front of a crowd of thousands in an emotional scene. August performed “Make It Home,” which is a cut from his Testimony album.

After the emotional reunion, Sheila Alsina took to her Instagram to pour out her heart- she wrote- “In my suffering for almost 2 years not completely understanding what God was doing in my life I thank God for the pain that I had to endure to get me to a place of finding rest in him. As God wanted my undivided attention from taking Melvin to division between me and August. I’m so glad I surrendered this time apart has made us see the value of love and family ❤️“
August Alsina’s brother was shot and killed
Alsina’s brother, Melvin LaBranch III was shot and killed in New Orleans in August 2010 – just days before the singer’s 18th birthday. This incident was a turnaround moment for the singer who started taking his music career seriously. The singer also became the legal guardian of his three teenage nieces – after their mother, Chandra lost her battle with cancer on Christmas in 2018 per thesun. Chandra who was Melvin LaBranch III’s girlfriend had been planning to wed Melvin before his tragic death in 2010.
