The actor shared with the Chicago Tribune that he saw his adopted son, Sharron Gossett when he was nine years old on a filed report for “ABC” at a shelter in St Louis. It aired on “Good Morning America,” with a focus homeless and hungry in the country.

The Touched by an Angel actor recalled the reporter asking Sharron what his one wish would be, and he responded that he wished “for something to eat and a place to stay.” Those words from the little boy pulled on Louis’s heart, who reached out to “ABC” to help him track down the young boy and later adopted him. As Louis reflected on his decision, he told the media outlet: ”I had an Oscar and I had an Emmy. I had all the trappings of success. My heart is fuller now that I have that young boy. Now I have my family.” Sharron was adopted in 1989.
During an interview with BET, the elder Gossett gushed over the joy he felt in being a father, Louis said, “being a dad is heaven… It’s a very special thing to be a dad. It means a great deal. It’s the continuing of the generations.” He said it was a unique experience that meant a lot to him.

The actor added that of the benefits of having children was being able to continue the generations in his family. He stressed the importance of family and paid tribute to the responsible fathers looking after their families as he celebrated Father’s Day in 2014.

Unfortunately, Sharron Gossett’s parents- Louis Gossett Jr. and Cyndi James Gossett went their separate ways in 1992, citing irreconcilable differences.

On February 9, 2010, Louis Gossett Jr announced that he had prostate cancer. He added the disease was caught in its early stages, and he expected to make a full recovery. In late December 2020, he was hospitalized in Georgia with COVID-19. Louis Gossett Jr is 87 years old as of 2023.
