Piers Baker is the son of iconic actor Tom Baker. Piers Baker’s father shot to fame after he played the role of the fourth incarnation of the Doctor in the science fiction television series Doctor Who from 1974 to 1981. Baker later appeared on television in the series Medics (1992-1995), Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) (2000-2001), and Monarch of the Glen (2004-2005). He also provided narration for the Little Britain (2003-2006) and Little Britain USA (2008) television comedies. Who is Tom Baker’s son?

Piers Baker was born in 1964 in the United Kingdom. As of 2023, he is 59 years old. Piers Baker is the youngest son of  Tom Baker and his first wife Anna Wheatcroft. Aside from Piers, the couple also had another child- Daniel Baker. His maternal grandfather and granduncle were rose growers. They did a great deal to popularise roses among British gardeners.

Piers’ parents got married in 1961, after they met at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, in Sidcup, Kent. Though they promised each other forever, they had to call their marriage a quit in 1966. In Tom Baker’s autobiography, Who On Earth Is Tom Baker? the Doctor Who actor reveals how, at the age of 31, he abandoned Piers and his earlier brother Daniel and didn’t see them again for years. Even then, contact with his children remained so rare that he failed to recognize his youngest son, Piers, when they met by chance in New Zealand.

The senior Baker was in Auckland to film a commercial and went to a restaurant with his third and current wife, Sue Jerrard. The waiter at the restaurant came to inform them that a young man at the bar wanted to take care of their bill. On his for thought being a famous star, Tom Baker assumed it was a fan, Tom sauntered over to make small talk but things took a surprising turn.

Narrating how their paths crossed- the actor said in his book- “The tall young man introduced himself as Piers Baker and said he was my son,’ recalls the actor, “his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets. ‘I didn’t recognize him – but I hadn’t seen him for 16 years. He was working in New Zealand as a horticulturist, but the coincidence seemed just too bizarre. When the truth sank in I was astonished, completely astonished.

He went on to say- “The first emotion I felt was pride. Maybe it is a sign of emotional shallowness, but I kept thinking how nice-looking he was and what a marvelous voice he had.” Then the actor began to regret. ‘I realised how much I’d missed him when he was little, after my first marriage broke up. I felt saddened that I had not seen him for such a long time, and realised that I was partly responsible.‘

Where is Tom Baker’s son Piers Baker now?

At the time his book was released in 1997, Piers Baker was based in New Zealand and was following in the footsteps of his maternal grandparents who were horticulturists. Though Tom keeps in regular contact with Piers, he has not seen his eldest son Daniel who he was told is a builder, for a couple of years. He has never met his grandson Max, Daniel’s son.

In his book, Tom reveals how the bitter disintegration of his first marriage drove him to attempt suicide; how he tried to murder his mother-in-law, and how he abandoned his children to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. According to the actor, it was a disastrous relationship – the Wheatcrofts made him feel deeply inadequate and his self-esteem hit an all-time low.

‘Sometimes they would give me nice gifts, a lovely shirt or a new suit,’ he says. ‘But they would always remind me that they had done this. I believe they wanted to control me.’ Occasionally his wife Anna did try to defend him by standing up to her parents. Confused and desperately unhappy he abandoned his children to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
