Who is Daniel Baker, Tom Baker’s son

Daniel Baker is the eldest son of legendary actor Tom Baker. Daniel Baker’s father performed in the television series Medics, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), and Monarch of the Glen. He is most famous for being the fourth incarnation of the Doctor in the science fiction television series Doctor Who. He is also known for the narration of the television comedy series Little Britain (2003–2006) and Little Britain USA (2008). His voice, which has been described as “sonorous”.

How old is Tom Baker’s son?

Daniel Baker was born in 1961 in the United Kingdom to his parents  Tom Baker and Anna Wheatcroft. As of 2023, Dan is 62 years old. He is the first child of the couple and has a younger brother Piers Baker. While attending the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, in Sidcup, Kent, Tom Baker met and fell in love with the woman who would be his first wife – Anna Wheatcroft. Dan’s parents got married in 1961 in Stratford despite their differences in background and personal wealth.

Daniel Baker’s mother belonged to a famous rose-growing dynasty. His maternal grandfather Alfred and granduncle Harry Wheatcroft were rose growers. They did a great deal to popularise roses among British gardeners. The Wheatcroft Rose is a flamboyant bloom named after the famously eccentric British rose grower, his granduncle Harry.

By his father’s accounts, his parents’ marriage was a disastrous one – the Wheatcrofts made him feel deeply inadequate and his self-esteem hit an all-time low. ‘Sometimes they would give me nice gifts, a lovely shirt or a new suit,‘ he says. ‘But they would always remind me that they had done this. I believe they wanted to control me.‘

Occasionally Daniel Baker’s mother did her best to defend his father by standing up to his grandparents, Alfred and Constance. Once, when Anna gently pointed out that Daniel was Tom’s baby, not Alfred’s, his grandfather flew into an apocalyptic rage, reeling off what he had paid for – the Nottingham nursing home, the best gynecologist in the country and the baby’s clothes. As the tirade ended, Alfred pointed at his son-in-law Tom Baker and said, ‘He’s got nothing. I paid it all, so the baby’s mine.‘- He revealed in his Autobiography.

 His parents’ marriage was beginning to fall apart and during that time Alfred then suffered a stroke and the family decided that Tom, with his nursing experience, should look after him. Caring for the man who had made his life miserable pushed Tom further into a deep depression.

“I found the whole experience draining and I felt completely isolated and alone“. He wrote in his autobiography Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?- “I couldn’t bear to look at my wife because she looked like her mother. And finally I couldn’t look at my own children because they reminded me of their mother.“

In his bleakest moments, he attempted suicide but failed, how he tried to murder his mother-in-law, and how he abandoned his children- Daniel Baker and his brother Piers to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. “You would have expected a reasonably intelligent young man to think about his children, but I thought my children were possessed by them, the Wheatcrofts. Instead of saying, “I must have my children,” I was easily persuaded that my state of neurosis would just make them more agitated. I don’t even think I said goodbye to them.“- He revealed in his book.

Contact with his children remained so rare that he failed to recognize Daniel Baker’s younger brother, Piers, when they met, by chance, in a New Zealand restaurant when he was there with his wife Sue Jerrard to film a commercial. At that moment he felt saddened that he had not seen him for such a long time and realized that he was partly responsible. After they meet, Tom keeps in regular contact with Piers but has not seen his other son Daniel who he was told is a builder, for a couple of years. He has never met Daniel’s son Max.
