Nathaniel Smith was born in 1902 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He was the son of Henry Smith and Kate (Gregory) Smith. He was the 7th child in a family of 9 children. In 1939 when war broke out, Nathaniel and his family were moved to Oxford, where they lived for the next 10 years or more.
He ended up training as a Medical Laboratory Technician, which is a person who does the blood processing for Hospitals and other medical businesses. He worked at the University of Oxford.
Maggie Smith’s parents first met in Newcastle where her mother was working, but she later moved to London while Nat was still doing his medical laboratory training. Nathaniel Smith and his wife Margaret Hutton-Smith‘s marriage was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1928 in the Pancras district.
