Ulvaeus and his ex-wife, Källersjö live on a private island in Djursholm, an upscale area in Danderyd municipality north of Stockholm. From 1984 to 1990 they lived in the United Kingdom, where Ulvaeus founded an IT business with his brother.

Björn Ulvaeu’s wife Lena Kallersjö suffers from incurable leukemia

– We sacked together, both Björn and I. We just grabbed each other. When we got out of there we were stunned. Processing the message has been a long process. In the first stage, you could not believe that it was true. Then you lay in despair, could not sleep, and thought you were going to die, Lena Kallersjö has told Hälsoliv.

Björn Ulvaeus further said at the same time:

– It’s terrible. We live with the disease, I think about it every day. And that you can not do anything about it. The best are the moments when you can forget about it. The doctors can not say how long she has left. Lena can fall ill and die in six months – or in twelve years.

Since the news of the illness, the family’s life has obviously been affected. Björn Ulvaeus has told Dagens Nyheter how his wife acted during the corona pandemic. Due to the leukemia, Lena can be susceptible to infection.

– My wife puts on rubber gloves and a face mask and goes up to Konsum, which is right next door, and shops at a great distance from others. That’s all we do. Sometimes children and grandchildren come and visit, but then we are out on the terrace.

Since the diagnosis, Lena Kallersjö has been forced to make a tough decision regarding the future. To try to carry the disease with dignity. Not to collapse completely – even if it was tempting.

– I have no choice. I can roll around and scream bile, it does not help a bit, said Lena.

In an interview with Dagens Nyheter, Björn Ulvaeus said that his wife currently has no symptoms. The family is her great support.

– You become different as a person when you have a limited time left. You must not be mean to anyone, you will probably be kinder and more truthful, Lena Kallersjö herself has told Hälsoliv.

Ulvaeus suffered from severe long-term memory loss. However, in a 2009 interview, he stated that reports of his memory loss were “hugely exaggerated”. In a TV interview with Fredrik Skavlan, Ulvaeus said the memory loss pertained to episodic memory. He said that, for instance, he was not nostalgic for his days with ABBA: “It was good while it lasted.”
