Joyce McRae is the wife of Sam Moore. Joyce McRae’s husband is an American vocalist who was a member of the soul and R&B group, Sam & Dave, from 1961 to 1981. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The duo’s most well-known song is probably “Soul Man,” which was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. They’re also known for “You Don’t Know Like I Know,” “I Thank You,” and “Wrap It Up.”

Joyce McRae is famous as the wife of Sam Moore. McRae was born around 1952, she is 71 years old as of 2023. McRae and Moore tied the knot in Europe in 1982. She was very instrumental in both his personal life and career. Joyce helped the singer overcome a lengthy battle with drug addiction during this period which the couple discussed in detail in Moore’s book Sam & Dave – An Oral History, co-written with Dave Marsh and published in 1997.

Despite two near-fatal overdoses, Sam Moore was unable to kick the habit. Nothing worked—despite going cold turkey or taking methadone—until he found an experimental drug treatment and the tough love of McRae.

Talking about her addiction Same Moore said- “I still thought, “Hey, I’m Sam. But the first time I overdosed, my girlfriend let me know what I was. “You’re just a junkie!” She kept screaming that over and over. Booking agents said it too.

He continued- “It changed when I met someone who cared and had the guts to get into the mind-bending battle you have to fight to help an addict. I had started going out with Joyce McRae in 1981, and it didn’t take her long to realize that what I was calling a heart condition, vitamin B shots—whatever lie I tried on her—was really heroin.

Joyce McRae took every step possible to make sure Sam Moore get his life back away from drug addiction- The singer narrated according to PEOPLE– “Joyce said she’d try to get me in a program here in California. Understand, I didn’t want to kick. I just wanted to get high legally. But by chance Joyce saw a TV program on this clinic, Community Health Projects in West Covina, that was having success with a drug called naltrexone.

Sam Moore continued to talk more about how his wife Joyce McRae saved his life “Joyce knew that to get into the naltrexone program, I had to get down to 20 milligrams of methadone a day. I left the U.S. needing 50. What I didn’t know was that for the three weeks we were in Europe, Joyce was fooling with the dosage—watering the methadone, giving me fewer Darvons. Messing with the dosage was the ultimate con, and it saved my life.

The singer not only went public with his addiction in 1983 but also made himself a strong anti-drug advocate and worked as a volunteer for anti-drug programs to help people battling addictions. The couple has been married for more than four decades. It is unclear if they have any children.

McRae became and is presently the business manager of the singer, and has worked together with Sam to advocate for artist’s rights, royalties, and pension payments. Before taking up the Job of Moore’s manager, Joyce once worked as an administrative assistant for Michael Jackson’s father in his management-production office per PEOPLE. She became Moore’s manager in November 1981.

Joyce McRae was also a trustee of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in Washington, D.C., whose many functions include helping struggling musicians. She was a very good friend of Mary Wells– an American singer, who helped to define the emerging sound of Motown in the early 1960s.

Sam Moore’s wife, Joyce McRae has a pure passion for music and went the best for the artists. Spending all these years in the music scene and witnessing artists not being fully compensated for their words has propelled her to seek justice. She strongly advocated for the Performance Rights Act of 2009 and continues to raise awareness for the need for performers to be paid whenever their recordings are broadcasted.
