Annie F. Luetkemeyer was born in Baltimore, Maryland United States on April 13, 1972. She is one of the three daughters of Suzanne Luetkemeyer (née Frey) and John Alexander Luetkemeyer Jr. Her father worked as a commercial real estate developer. She holds an American nationality and is of German descent. She grew up in Ruxton-Riderwood, Maryland.

Annie Luetkemeyer grew up alongside her two older sisters. Her big sisters are Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer, an actress, producer, and director, and Molly Luetkemeyer, a designer. The Luetkemeyer siblings are very close to each other. She graduated from the Calvert School in the year 1984. She obtained an AB with distinction in American Studies from Stanford University (1994).

In the year 1999, Annie got an M.D. in medicine from Harvard Medical School. In 2002 and 2003, she trained in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and in 2006, she completed advanced training in clinical research there, and then an infectious disease fellowship in 2007. Annie called for more randomized controlled trials to assess the impact of hydroxychloroquine. “We don’t have data from randomised, controlled trials telling us how chloroquine worked in real people,” Annie Luetkemeyer said. She served as the principal investigator in the clinical trial of remdesivir, an antiviral medication developed by Gilead Sciences.

Annie is investigating treatment strategies that include remdesivir, convalescent plasma, and immune modulators. Her work looks at which patients benefit from treatment, the optimal time for receipt of treatment, and what combination of antivirals and anti-inflammatories will be most appropriate.

Her sister Julie Bowen married real estate investor and software developer Scott Phillips, on September 9, 2004. They have three sons, Oliver McLanahan Phillips (b. April 2007) and twins John Phillips and Gustav Phillips (b. 8 May 2009).

Julie Bowen has publicly shared her parenting advice. She also advised parents who have picky eaters at home. “[It’s] not as much a tip as it is a reframing,” Julie said. “My sister, who’s a doctor and had kids before me, said, ‘Don’t look at it [like] they have to have a vegetable every day, they’ve got to have fruits every day and all they want to eat is mac and cheese or cereal.”
