Josephine Poszywak was born on 21 March 1918 in Rossford, Wood, Ohio, United States. She is said to be the daughter of Phillip Poszywak and Anna Firlik. She was a Detroit laundry worker. She got married to Jimmy Hoffa. Josephine and Jimmy Hoffa met in 1936.

At the time they met, Josephine Poszywak was walking at the picket line outside her place of employment, per sources. They met during a nonunionized laundry workers’ strike action. They got in touch and eventually started dating. After dating for a while the pair got married on September 25, 1937. Josephine was 18 years old when she got married to Jimmy Hoffa.

Josephine Poszywak and Jimmy Hoffa produced two children: a daughter named Barbara Ann Crancer, and a son named James P. Hoffa. They paid $6,800 in 1939 for a modest home in northwestern Detroit. The family later owned a simple summer lakefront cottage in Orion Township, Michigan, north of Detroit.

At the age of 62, Josephine Poszywak passed away. She died on September 12, 1980, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States. She was interred at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Michigan. The cause of her death is still unknown.

Josephine Poszywak’s Husband Went Mission Before She Died

Josephine Poszywak’s husband Jimmy Hoffa disappeared on July 30, 1975. He disappeared after he went out to meet Anthony Provenzano, an American criminal who was a powerful caporegime in the Genovese crime family New Jersey faction, and Anthony Giacalone, an alleged kingpin in the Detroit Mafia.

The meeting was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, a Detroit suburb. Jimmy Hoffa wrote Anthony Giacalone’s initials and the time and location of the meeting in his office calendar: “TG—2 p.m.—Red Fox.”

Jimmy Hoffa phoned his wife Josephine Poszywak from a payphone on a post in front of Damman Hardware, directly behind the Machus Red Fox, and complained that Anthony Giacalone had not shown up and that he had been stood up. Witnesses revealed that they saw Jimmy Hoffa as he stood by his car and paced the restaurant’s parking lot.

Two men saw Jimmy Hoffa, recognized him, and stopped to chat with him briefly and shake his hand. Later a witness reported seeing Jimmy Hoffa in the back of a maroon “Lincoln or Mercury” car with three other people. Josephine Poszywak called her son and daughter to tell them that their father had not come home.

Josephine Poszywak and Jimmy Hoffa’s son James filed a missing person report and the family offered a $200,000 reward for any information about the disappearance. There was an investigation and numerous law enforcement agencies including the FBI were involved in the case.

As of 2021, digs are still periodically conducted in the Detroit area in search of Jimmy Hoffa’s body, but a common theory among experts is that the body was cremated. He is believed to have been murdered by the Mafia and was declared legally dead. He was missing for 47 years and 24 days; declared dead in absentia on July 30, 1982, at age 69.
