She met Alexander Lukashenko while still in high school in the village of Ryzhkovichi, and married him in 1975, upon graduation from the Mogilev Pedagogical Institute (now Mogilev State University). At this time, she worked in a kindergarten. Since January 1998, she has been the head of the department of the Mogilev Regional Executive Committee for the Improvement of the Population.
Galina Lukashenko did not move with her husband to Minsk at the beginning of his presidential career, instead of living on Zemlyanichnaya Street in Shklow, where she has since lived. Galina Lukashenko’s son, Viktor graduated from the International Relations faculty of the Belarusian State University in 1998 and served his mandatory military duty at the Belarusian Border Guard Service between 1998-2001. He later worked at the Foreign Ministry of Belarus and at a military exports company, Agat.
Galina Lukashenko’s son Dimitry is the head of the Presidential Sports Club and is a graduate of Belarusian State University’s International Relations Faculty. In 2011, after the wave of repressions that followed the 2010 presidential election in Belarus, Lukashenko became subject to an EU travel ban and asset freeze as part of a sanctions list of 208 individuals responsible for political repressions, electoral fraud, and propaganda. In the EU Council’s decision, Lukashenko has been described as “Businessman, with active participation in financial operations involving the Lukashenka family.” The sanctions were lifted in 2016.
