Josephine Abraham is the mother of F. Murray Abraham. Josephine was born in 1916 in El Paso Texas. She was one of 14 children and the daughter of an immigrant who worked in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania.
“Not many people know it, but as a young girl she had a nickname in her family of 14 children,” F. Murray Abraham told El Paso Times. “She was known as ‘Tuffy,’ because she was the protector of her brothers and sisters, and never hesitated to fight for them, no matter how big the tormentor. I believe that her generous, loving, kind spirit was solidly based in a very tough mentality. Josephine Abraham passed away in 2012 at the age of 96. In an email to El Paso Times, F. Murray Abraham talked about his mother. The Moon King actor said his mother loved people and she manifested that through her kitchen – it was always open, F. Murray Abraham said. “...Spaghetti, Syrian bread, Italian bread, Kibbee … there was always something to eat, or on the stove, or in the oven,” he said.

Abraham was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Abraham and her sons, Robert and Jack. F. Murray’s younger brothers were killed in separate car accidents. “After the loss of two sons, Robert and Jack, for the first time in my life I saw her spirit fade, and her famous smile disappeared for a long time, But she fought back out of that dark place and became her old self again, full of hope and love and life. She serves as an example of the caring, indomitable human spirit that we in America seem to have lost track of,” he wrote in his email to El Paso Times.

Frederick Abraham was the father of F. Murray Abraham. Frederick was an Immigrant who immigrated from Syria during the 1920s famine.
