Controversy

There were calls from certain Australians and tennis players to rename the Margaret Court Arena. Politicians including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, rejected calls for the change of name, saying the name celebrates Margaret Court as a tennis player.

Barrymore Court hit back against people including Billie Jean King who suggested that Margaret’s name should be removed from the Australian Open arena according to Daily Mail.

Barrymore Court’s wife Margaret has been a consistent critic of same-sex marriage in Australia. She got involved in a controversy after she spoke out against marriage equality. After her comments, people wanted a change in the name of the Margaret Court Arena, in Melbourne.

Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova spoke out in favor of the change. Barrymore Court said ‘there should be no thought of changing the name’. He said his wife never made the statement that transgender children are of the devil.

Barrymore said, ‘I suggest Billie Jean first check her facts before making allegations against my wife.’ He added, ‘We have reputable sources review all her press releases and interviews and cannot trace these remarks back to Margaret.’

‘Margaret always admired Billie Jean as her number one opponent and often praised her ability,’ he said.
