Suzy’s daughter was arrested for cocaine possession. She was using drugs and alcohol excessively which affected her work. She started to arrive late and was incoherent during rehearsals. She was given six-week break by the producers to help her addiction but was ultimately forced to fire her in 1980.

Suzy’s daughter had two near-fatal overdoses. She then went to Fair Oaks Hospital voluntarily for treatment. In 1981, the producers of One Day at a Time invited her back to the show. She relapsed into cocaine use and the following year, she collapsed on the show’s set.

She refused to take a drug test leading to her being fired permanently. She was in a drug rehab program for nine months. She then started to work as a drug rehab counselor at the Breathe Life Healing Center in West Hollywood, California. She made an appearance on the third season of Celebrity Rehab, which red in January and February 2010. She has discussed her recovery on the March 17, 2010, episode of The View.
