Susan Omillian- José Feliciano’s wife

Susan Omillian

Susan Omillian is the wife of José Feliciano. Susan Omillian’s husband, Feliciano is a Puerto Rican musician, singer, and composer, best known for many international hits, including his rendition of the Doors’ “Light My Fire” and the best-selling Christmas single, “Feliz Navidad”.

Susan Omillian is the second woman the Puerto Rican Musician got married to. Before Susan, Jose was Janna (née Hilda Pérez). Feliciano was divorced from his first wife in 1978.

How did the two love birds meet, start their relationship that later lead to marriage? José Feliciano met Susan Omillian, a young art student in Detroit, Michigan in August 1971. After becoming friends and dating for 11 years they married in 1982.

The couple got married in a beautiful ceremony in the presence of their friends, family, and loved ones. They have three children: a daughter, Melissa, and two sons, Jonathan and Michael.

Susan was raised in Detroit and met Ernie Harwell during the controversy over Feliciano’s rendition of the National Anthem in 1968. It was Harwell who later introduced her to Feliciano. She and her family reside in Weston, Connecticut.

Susan — Susan Omillian — is the same Susan who started the fan club for José Feliciano back in 1968. She met him three years after his historic anthem performance in Detroit.

When José Feliciano sang the anthem some people in Detroit, like 14-year-old Susan Omillian, loved hearing a new sound for the same old anthem.

“I was in class. On the way home, I heard that something had happened at the ballpark,” Susan Omillian says. “People were talking on the streets, on the porches along the way. When I got home, during the news, they showed a clip of this guy playing the guitar and singing the anthem as no one had ever heard. And it was like, ‘Wow, this is cool.’

“There was so much negativity that I thought was unnecessary, uncalled for, unfair. I don’t know, a 14-year-old, what do they do? Back in those days, if you’re me, you start a fan club.”

“By the end of the week, he was having dinner at my house,” Susan Omillian says. “And we went to Boblo — the amusement park. My dad was in the hospital at the time, and so he wanted to visit him. So, he brought a guitar and gave him a little concert at the hospital.”

They’ve been married for 36 years.

“We married on our 11th anniversary of having become friends,” she says.
