Setsuko Joane Sunahara is the ex-wife of David Suzuki. Sunahara’s ex-husband Suzuki is a Canadian academic, science broadcaster, and environmental activist. Since the mid-1970s, Suzuki has been known for his television and radio series, documentaries, and books about nature and the environment. He is best known as host and narrator of the popular and long-running CBC Television science program The Nature of Things, seen in over 40 countries.
Who is David Suzuki’s first wife, Setsuko Joane Sunahara?
Setsuko Joane Sunahara is famous for being the first wife of the famous scientist David Suzuki. Though it is unclear how the couple first meet, Prezi revealed David and Setsuko were high school sweethearts. They got married in 1958 in a beautiful ceremony in the presence of their family, friends, and loved ones. Their marriage produced three children- Tamiko Suzuki, Troy Suzuki, and Laura Suzuki.
Though their initial plan was to stay together forever, things didn’t go as planned. Their marriage came to an end in 1973. According to David, they separated in 1964 and at that time they had only two children. Their daughter Laura was conceived before Joane and David had agreed to separate.
Laura was born prematurely, on July 4, 1964, at the very same time David went into the hospital for a month in isolation after contracting hepatitis b from eating contaminated oysters. The famous science broadcaster revealed his obsession with his Lab works triggered the ending of his marriage to his first wife Joane.
“I had tried to devote as much time as I could to my first offspring, but the lab and research had dominated my life and the children had paid a price for this obsession with the end of my marriage to Joane and even beyond that.” He revealed in his book David Suzuki: The Autobiography.

Where is Setsuko Joane Sunahara now?
After their marriage came to an end, Setsuko Joane went totally out of the limelight. Much was heard from Setsuko Joane Sunahara after her divorce from her ex-husband. Though their marriage has ended, David still shower praises on his first wife. The Canadian academic said –
“After my first marriage had ended, I endeavored to be with the children every day I was in Vancouver and was aided by Joane’s generosity in allowing me unrestricted access to them.…. Joane was my first love, and though we have met less and less often over the years, she has always had my greatest respect and gratitude for the years we did spend together and for never using the children as a weapon to punish me for my shortcomings.” David supported Joane so that she could be a full-time mother after their marriage ended.
In 1973, Setsuko Joane Sunahara’s husband, Suzuki married a second time to Tara Elizabeth Cullis, with whom he had two daughters, Severn Cullis-Suzuki and Sarika Cullis-Suzuki. She is also a grandmother to six grandchildren. Setsuko Joane Sunahara’s husband Suzuki is an atheist. It is unclear if Setsuko is also an atheist herself.
