Rayn Urich’s father, Robert announced he had been diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks soft tissue. He continued working while undergoing treatment for his illness and also became an advocate for finding a cure for cancer. He won an award from the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the Gilda Radner Courage Award for his work raising cancer awareness.
A week before his death, Urich was hospitalized at Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for breathing problems. He died there on April 16, 2002, he was 55. After he passed away in 2002, Menzies established the Robert Urich Foundation and spent most of her time in her last years devoted to the organization that raises money for cancer research and support for cancer patients.
Ryan Urich gave a rare interview with Closer Weekly where he discussed who his father was and how he raised them. He told the publication that acting was Robert’s passion and even when he was ill, he never let up. He told the outlet- “The guy was a consummate professional, He just wanted to keep going — acting was his passion. For him, it wasn’t work.”

Robert Urich’s son is Doctor
Ryan, who’s now a medical doctor and actor, revealed that Robert was actually diagnosed with cancer three times. The actor had to undergo so much surgery, chemo, and, radiation, all of which took its toll on him. Dr. Ryan Urich said that his father’s health problems were one of the things that inspired him to become a doctor.
I went into medicine because I couldn’t help my dad medically, but maybe I can help someone else.
He revealed that his sister, Emily is an ER nurse and they both continue to honor their parents’ memory through The Urich Foundation, a cancer charity. Ryan said:
[My father] lives on through his children.
He was a student at Ross University Medical School. Ryan Urich did take a stab at acting. He was credited in The Killer Within Me and Night Walk. Ryan Urich’s mother also was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in November 2017. She died on December 24, 2017.
