Who is Rosaline Elbay?

Rosaline Elbay is an Egyptian actress, writer and former archaeologist. As an actress, she is known for playing Judy Goodwin in the Netflix series Kaleidoscope (2023) (under the working title Jigsaw). Aside from that she also gained traction for her roles as ‘Amani’ on Hulu/A24 Films series Ramy and as ‘Sara’ on MBC Masr series Qabeel.

She was born in Egypt

Elbay was born in Cario Egypt on 21 November 1990 to her parents. She is 32 years old as of 2022. She has not made any mention of her parents and siblings. However, her parents were also Egyptians. She initially moved to the UK at the age of 18 to pursue a degree at Oxford

She attended Oxford University

Elbay attended Oxford University. She read Classics and also completed a master’s in Colonial History. She went on to study at the Actors Studio in New York City with American actress and acting coach Elizabeth Kemp. Rosaline Elbay also obtained her MFA in Acting from LAMDA.

Elbay Started her career in the Theater focused on Shakespeare

 Elbay started her career in UK theater with a focus on Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night). She took up acting as a hobby and made occasional trips back to her homeland Cairo to learn all about the acting scene in Egypt.

Rosaline Elbay in 2018 made her debut when she starred in Diamond Dust, the feature-film adaptation of Ahmed Mourad‘s bestselling novel, and Fork & Knife, which premiered at the 2018 El Gouna Film Festival.

She featured in a Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winning show

The 32 years old actress is already making it huge in the industry. Since 2019, Elbay has played Amani in Hulu/A24 Films series Ramy. Ramy is a Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winning show that tells the story of Ramy, a son of Egyptian immigrants son on a spiritual journey in his politically divided New Jersey neighborhood. 

The series premiered at the 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival and holds an approval rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 8/10 rating on IMDB. Season 2, co-starring Mahershala Ali, premiered in May 2020.

She is an award-winning actress

Rosaline Elbay was awarded the 2019 Al-Wafd Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best New Face for her role in Qabeel. Aside from the award, the actress has also received critical acclaim for her MENA region television role as Sara, the partner of protagonist Tarek (Mohamed Mamdouh), on Qabeel. Elbay was starring in MBC Masr’s 2020 series Luebat Al-Nesyan, directed by Hani Khalifa. However, she left the show mid-filming for health reasons.

She is an advocate for Refugees Protection

While hosting the opening ceremony of the 2019 El Gouna Film Festival, Rosaline Elbay Wore a dress made of recycled plastic that was hand-worked by refugee women sponsored by the UNHCR. She has since continued advocating for The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In a statement on her Facebook, she stated that “As film and theatre-makers, we have an absolute responsibility to amplify the voices of those living alongside us without the privilege of a platform. This urgently includes those of displaced background and seekers of refuge.

She starred as Judy Goodwin in the Netflix series Kaleidoscope

In September 2021, Rosaline Elbay was announced as a cast member of the Netflix heist drama series created by Eric Garcia, Kaleidoscope. She is to play alongside Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, and Rufus Sewell just to mention a few.

Rosaline Elbay’s character on the show, Judy Goodwin is described as “the heist crew’s demolitions specialist, headstrong and independent — an eccentric spitfire with a sarcastic edge who is clever and talented enough to stay a step ahead of her mistakes.” The series has commenced shooting in New York. The Heist drama, Kaleidoscope is structured in a non-linear order, in which viewers can choose what order they watch episodes leading up to the finale.
