Robin Francis Lennon’s half-brother John Lennon was shot and fatally wounded in the archway of the Dakota, his residence in New York City. The incident occurred on the 8th of December 1980. He was killed by Mark David Chapman. Mark was a fan of John Lennon’s band the Beatles.
Mark David Chapman got angered by John Lennon’s lavish lifestyle and his 1966 comment that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus”. He planned to kill John Lennon over several months and waited for him at the Dakota on the morning of 8 December.
John Lennon was shot twice in the back and twice in the shoulder while he was with his wife, Yoko Ono. He was rushed in a police cruiser to the emergency room of Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His remains were cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. He was 40 years old when he died.
Mark David Chapman ignored going to trial when he ignored his lawyer’s advice and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life.
