Robert and his siblings are of mostly English descent, though they also have some German ancestry. Through an entirely paternal line, Robert is a direct descendant of English colonist David Selleck who moved to Massachusetts from Somerset, England, in 1633. Through this line, he is of the 11th generation of his family born in North America.

At a very young age, his parents moved from Detroit to Sherman Oaks, California, in 1948. His father moved the family to Van Nuys, a predominantly agricultural area that was just beginning to sprout suburban communities. His father was offered a job with Coldwell Banker that offered no salary and no weekly guarantee against future sales. He made his earnings solely on commission.

The Selleck Company for Real Estate Development and Consultation was based in Westlake Village and has been credited with reviving the former General Motors plant in Van Nuys. The development of a shopping complex on that site has had a major effect on the economic revitalization of the area.
