Peter Basil Mirren was born in 1947, in Hammersmith, London, England. He is the only son of his parents, Vasily Petrovich Mironoff (1913–1980), and Kathleen “Kitty” Alexandrina Eva Matilda (née Rogers; 1908–1996). His mother was a working-class woman from West Ham, the thirteenth of fourteen children born to a butcher.

Peter Basil’s father was a member of an exiled family of the Russian nobility. His father was Russian while his mother was English. His parents were married in Hammersmith in the year 1938. His father, Vasily Petrovich Mironoff anglicized his first name to Basil and also changed the family’s last name to Mirren by deed poll.

Peter’s father did several jobs. He played the viola with the London Philharmonic Orchestra before World War II, was an ambulance driver during the war, and served in the East End of London during the Blitz. He also worked as a cab driver, a driving test examiner, and a civil servant with the Ministry of Transport.

Peter is his parent’s only son but not their only child. He has two elder sisters. His sisters are Katherine “Kate” Mirren, born in 1942, and Helen Lydia Mironoff, born on 26 July 1945. His paternal grandparents were Pyotr Vasilievich Mironov and Maria Sinchugova. Pyotr owned a family estate near Gzhatsk (now Gagarin) and was part of the Russian aristocracy.

Peter’s great-grandmother, Countess Lydia Andreevna Kamenskaya, was an aristocrat and a descendant of Count Mikhail Fedotovich Kamensky, a prominent Russian general in the Napoleonic Wars. His paternal grandfather Pyotr was a colonel in the Imperial Russian Army and fought in the 1904 Russo-Japanese War.

Pyotr became a diplomat and was negotiating an arms deal in Britain when he and his family were stranded by the Russian Revolution in 1917. He was a cab driver when he settled in England. It is assumed that Peter Basil Mirren and his siblings were raised in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Peter’s childhood experiences are unavailable.
