Basil Mirren is the father of Helen Mirren. Basil was born Vasily Petrovich Mironoff on July 10, 1913, in Russia. He is the son of Pyotr Vasilievich Mironov and Maria Sinchugova. He was a member of an exiled family of the Russian nobility. At the time he was two years old, his father Pyotr took him and the rest of his family to England.

The family includes Basil Mirren’s mother Maria and his siblings Irina, and Olga. The family reportedly had to remain in England by force when, in 1917, the Russian Revolution broke out. Pyotr was the owner of a family estate close to Gzhatsk (now Gagarin). He was part of the Russian aristocracy.

Basil’s father Pyotr had served as a colonel in the Imperial Russian Army and fought in the 1904 Russo-Japanese War. He became a diplomat and was negotiating an arms deal in Britain when he and his family were stranded by the Russian Revolution in 1917. Settling in England, Pyotr took up a job as a taxi driver to support his family.

Basil’s grandmother, Countess Lydia Andreevna Kamenskaya was an aristocrat and a descendant of Count Mikhail Fedotovich Kamensky, a prominent Russian general in the Napoleonic Wars. There isn’t much information about Basil’s childhood available. His educational background and qualifications are not known.

Basil Mirren played the viola with the London Philharmonic Orchestra before World War II. He also worked as an ambulance driver during the war and served in the East End of London during the Blitz. Basil married Kathleen “Kitty” Alexandrina Eva Matilda (née Rogers; 1908–1996) in the year 1938, in Hammersmith.

Basil Mirren then decided to anglicize his first name from Vasily to Basil. He and his wife Kathleen were blessed with three children. Their children are Helen Lydia Mironoff aka Helen Mirren, Peter Basil Mirren, and Katherine Mirren. After their second child Helen was born, Basil started driving a cab to provide for his family as he left the orchestra.

Basil Mirren would later become a driving test examiner, and then a civil servant with the Ministry of Transport. Somewhere in the year 1951, he changed the family name to Mirren by deed poll. She was awarded the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her services to drama.
