Paco Alverío: Who is Rita Moreno’s father?

Paco Alverío is the father of Legendary actress Rita Moreno. Paco Alverío’s daughter made a name for herself in Hollywood. She is one of the last remaining stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood with numerous accolades including an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony (EGOT). He is best known for films such as West Side Story, Carnal Knowledge, and  Singin’ in the Rain. Paco’s full name was Francisco José “Paco” Alverío.

Paco Alverío was a Farmer

The West Side Story actress was born Rosa Dolores Alverio in Humacao, a small town near the Puerto
Rican rain forest. While she was known for starring as Googie Gomez in the 1975 Terrence McNally musical The Ritz earning her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Rita Moreno’s father was a farmer while her mother Rosa María (née Marcano) was a seamstress.

Alverío’s wife Rosa María was only 17 when they had their daughter Rita. Aside from the actress, her parents also had a son Francisco Alverio. When Rita was 5, the couple called their marriage a quit and the little girl moved with her mother to New York in 1936 where the precocious child soon began dance lessons.

Paco Alverío’s wife moved with her daughter to New York but left their son Francisco with him. Rita Moreno and her younger brother would not see each other again until 2021. The famous actress adopted the surname of her first stepfather, Edward Moreno, Rosa Maria’s second husband.

The iconic actress has broken new ground for Latinos in the field of entertainment throughout her career. Moreno began her career in show business at an early age. Over the decades of her career, Moreno has been awarded dozens of show business awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1995.

A favorite of Chicago audiences and critics, The West Side Story actress received that city’s coveted Joseph Jefferson Award in 1968 as Serafina in The Rose Tatoo and in 1985 was awarded the prestigious Sara Siddons Award for her hilarious portrayal of Olive Madison in the female version of The Odd Couple. Also in 2023, she is set to play Abuela Toretto, the grandmother of Dom (Vin Diesel), Jakob (John Cena), and Mia (Jordana Brewster) in the Fast & Furious film Fast X.

Paco Alverío’s granddaughter, Fernanda Luisa Gordon is also an actress and has starred in a dozen of films. Fernanda is also a jewelry designer and freelance graphic designer. She is the owner of Nandiz Designs and in 2021, she and her mother, Moreno went to the Oscars red carpet wearing one of her own creations.
