Miles Lightfoot’s father Gordon Lightfoot suffered a serious stomach ache before the second concert of a two-night stand in Orillia. He was airlifted to McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, and underwent emergency vascular surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Gordon Lightfoot was in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He suffered a six-week coma and a tracheotomy. He also did four surgical operations and all his remaining 2002 concert dates were canceled. He spent over three months after he was taken to the McMaster Medical Centre.
Gordon Lightfoot was eventually released to continue his recovery at home. He underwent follow-up surgery to continue the treatment of his abdominal condition, in 2003. Also, he suffered a minor stroke in the middle of a performance on September 14, 2006.
Gordon Lightfoot was unable use the middle and ring fingers on his right hand. In 2007, he had full use of his right hand and played all of the guitar parts in concert as he originally wrote them. Full recovery took longer. “I fought my way back in seven or eight months”.

Miles Lightfoot’s father Gordon Lightfoot was the victim of a death hoax. In February 2010, a death hoax started on Twitter when the then-CTV journalist David Akin posted on Twitter and Facebook that Gordon had passed away.
At the time, Gordon Lightfoot was at a dental appointment when the rumors spread. He got to know about everything while he was listening to the radio on his drive home. He called Charles Adler of CJOB, the DJ and radio station he heard reporting his death, and dispelled the rumors.
Gordon Lightfoot granted an interview and disclosed that he isn’t dead but alive and doing well.
