Mattew’s father, Gene Saks was an American director and actor. An inductee of the American Theater Hall of Fame, his acting career began with a Broadway debut in 1949. As a director, he was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning three for his direction of I Love My Wife, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Biloxi Blues.
In an interview, the “Golden Girls” star Bea Arthur’s son Matthew Saks discussed their home life and what it was like to be raised by her famous mother.
“Since I can remember, my mother was an actress,” Matthew told Fox News in 2019. “I literally went – when I was three years old – on the road with her.”
The son of Bea Arthur added that he spent a lot of time in her mom’s dressing room. Matthew Saks continued he knew her plays due to the speaker system and that he could hear it out while he was in that dressing room.
During the interview, Matthew revealed that his mother was unfazed by her success in Hollywood. Instead, she preferred the security of her own home and the company of her trusted friends.
“My mother had close relationships with a few close friends,” he explained. “She wasn’t a loner. But she really liked sitting around and chilling, as people say.”
It wasn’t personal for Matthew when it came to Bea’s alleged ongoing problems with actress Betty White. He mentioned that her mother wasn’t particularly close to anyone and that she preferred to stay at home and read a newspaper. Although Matthew Saks admitted that his mom had a few issues with Betty, he said that she liked her.
Arthur’s then-11-year-old son, Matthew Saks, the elder of two boys she adopted with her second husband, film and theater director Gene Saks, was fascinated by these drunken evenings. “They were always excited to come to her house,” Matthew, now 55, says of his mother’s numerous gay confidantes. “I recall Rock Hudson coming over once and clearing the table.” On one hand, he was balancing five dishes. ‘How can you do that?’ I thought. ‘Before I was in the Navy, I was a waiter,’ he explained.
Matthew Saks’ mother earned 11 Emmy Award nominations and won twice in 1977 for “Maude” and in 1988 for “The Golden Girls.” Before she turned into a TV star, she was a successful theater actress and singer. In 2009, his mother died at her home in Los Angeles at 86 years old, as reported by The New York Times. The cause was cancer.
Matthew Saks’s father, Gene also died of pneumonia at his East Hampton residence on March 28, 2015, aged 93.
