Marilyn Nault took her final breath in January 2009. Marilyn died after battling cancer. She died at the age of 59 years and her death was shocking and unexpected. A private funeral service was held in Seattle on January 26, 2009.

On her death, the University of San Francisco released a statement saying,” I join with the entire University community in offering Bill Russell our sympathy and condolences, along with our prayerful support at this moment of profound loss.”
Then USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J. added,” We pray that he may feel God’s embrace through the love and support of his family and friends.”
Her husband, Bill Russell died on July 31, 2022, in Mercer Island, Washington, U.S. He was 88 years old when he died. He died at home and the news was announced in a Twitter post by his family. In a statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said that Russell was “the greatest champion in all of the team sports”.
