Karina joined Airstream Motor Homes and Caravans, based in Isleham, near Mildenhall, Cambridgeshire as director of production on an annual salary of about pounds 25,000. The company was run by Mr. Russell Porcas, and his wife Marcella.

Karina was friends with Mr. Russell for about eight years. Karina Hoffman-Birkhead’s father Dustin Hoffman was reportedly informed about her daughter’s act by a letter from Marcella Porcas and her husband Russell. Her father replied and wrote: “My wife and I want to express our regret at the losses to which you refer.

“Naturally, we were saddened and indeed dismayed to hear of the charges against Karina. Given her marriage, the birth of her child, and the new job, we thought that her life was in good order. As you can imagine, this all came as a very disheartening surprise.” When she was asked why she did what she did, Karina replied: ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do it. He said: “The motive for the theft was severe financial difficulties, which she is still struggling to put right. There is no evidence of high living in this case.
