However, at the time Anne Byrne and Dustin Hoffman were together, they were living on West 11th Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. She and her then-husband Dustin Hoffman were living in a building next door to a townhouse occupied at the time by members of the Weathermen. In March 1970, the house next door exploded and caught fire.
Members of the Weather Underground, a group of left-wing militants planning a terror bombing of Columbia University and Fort Dix in New Jersey, were killed by explosives they had been stockpiling in the house next door to Anne and Dustin. It was initially reported that this incident happened due to a gas leak.
It wasn’t long before the block was crawling with fire engines, police cars, TV crews, and reporters, most of whom had more on their minds than the actual fire. Later after some investigations were done, investigators found out that the explosion was not caused by a gas leak as first thought but actually by the accidental ignition of a stockpile of weapons in the building next door.
The radical group The Weather Underground had been living there, preparing for their next attack. An unusually-shaped window on the front of the building now memorializes the explosion. In the 2002 documentary The Weather Underground, Dustin Hoffman can be seen standing in the street during the aftermath of the explosion.
