She is the daughter of Paul Hembree Hartley, an account executive, and Mary “Polly” Ickes (née Watson), a manager and saleswoman.

Mariette Hartley is the grandchild of the late John B. Watson, an American psychologist who popularized the scientific theory of behaviorism, establishing it as a psychological school. She graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1965. In 1993, she received an honorary degree from Rider College.
