John Arthur Stratten’s Sister Dorothy Was Murdered
John Arthur’s sister Dorothy was murdered at the age of 20 by her estranged husband and manager Paul Snider, who committed suicide on the same day. Her death inspired two movies, the 1981 TV movie Death of a Centerfold and the 1983 theatrical release Star 80, as well as the book The Killing of the Unicorn and the songs “Californication” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, “The Best Was Yet to Come” by Bryan Adams, and “Cover Girl” by Prism.
John’s sister, Dorothy Stratten was made a Playmate in the August 1979 issue of Playboy. Soon after, she was pressured into marrying Snider, who had a Svengali-like influence on her. Again in 1980, it was revealed that Dorothy would be tabbed as the Playmate of the Year by Playboy publisher and founder Hugh Hefner. While this was one of the crowning achievements of her career, things were not going well in her marriage to Snider.
After the couple split up, Snider bought a shotgun and persuaded Stratten to visit their West Los Angeles apartment. Snider bound her up, sexually assaulted her, and then pointed a shotgun at her face and pulled the trigger. To complete the murder-suicide, Snider turned the shotgun on himself.
Since her death, Stratten has become something of a minor cult fixture and has had two (one a television) movies, a song, and a couple of books written about her. The last movie she was in, They All Laughed (1981), was released after her death.
As said earlier, John Arthur Stratten has not been in the limelight like his sisters did. John only came into the picture because of his two sisters’ height they have achieved in Hollywood.
