Her story sparked the Urban Legend story of the 1960s The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs also known as the babysitter or the sitter.

Janett’s story has become the basic storyline that has been adapted in some movies. Janett Christman was born on the 21st of March 1936, in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, USA. She is the daughter of Charles E. Christman and Lula Mae L Hart Christman Krull. According to sources, Charles and his wife Lula Mae were owners of Ernie’s Steakhouse in Columbia, Missouri for several years.

Janett Christman was the oldest daughter of her parents. Her siblings are Reta Christman Smith and Cheryl Christman Bottorff. Her paternal grandparents are Samuel Harrison Christman and Nellie Virginia Leggett Christman. Her maternal grandparents are Ceola L. Hart and Etheleen Grace Northup.

Janett Christman and her family lived in Boonville, Missouri, but later relocated to a small town of Columbia, Missouri. Janett attended Jefferson Junior High School, where she was in her eighth grade, at age 13. She liked playing the piano and singing. She was also hardworking.

What Actually Happened To Janett Christman?

Janett Christman worked as a babysitter. On March 18, 1950, she decided to babysit a 3-year-old boy named Gregory, the son of Ed Romack and Anne Romack, in their small one-story isolated home situated in the outskirts of Columbia, Missouri. On that day, Janett’s school organized a party but she didn’t attend.

Janett Christman was fond of babysitting for two families, the Romacks and the Muellers. She was babysitting because she wanted to make money for herself and also because she loved children. Her parents only allow her to babysit for people they knew.

While Janett Christman went to babysit at the Romack’s residence, she was given certain instructions in case anything transpired. Ed Romack was leaving home for an evening party so he taught Janett how to load, unload and fire his shotgun if the need arose and placed the gun near the front door.

Janett Christman was told to turn on the bright porch light before answering the doorbell if anyone comes calling. She was also told to put on the radio for Gregory to sleep with because he likes that. The Romacks left for the party, leaving Gregory in the hands of Janett.

The police received a call from a girl who said, “come quick!”. She was not able to mention her name or even her whereabouts and her telephone line was cut short. Her phone call was untraced because at that late hour the telephonic company’s test board did not have any staff. The girl was later identified as Janett.

Anne Romack phoned home from the party, which was reportedly at the Moon Valley Villa to check in on Jannet and Gregory but no answer to the call. Anne Romack did not worry much because she taught Janett might be already asleep at that time of the night.

Anne Romack and Ed Romack later decided to go back home. They got home and realized that the front window blinds were open, and the porch light lit up. The house’s front and back doors were already unlocked, and the side window was broken off. They found Janett lying in a pool of blood on a shag carpet.

Someone had killed Janett Christman. She was also sexually assaulted. Her face expressed a head injury and multiple puncture wounds that occurred to have been made by a mechanical pencil. She had scars on her face which appears as if fingernails had scratched it. Janett’s death was ruled as asphyxiation. Gregory on the other hand was not harmed.

Who killed Janett Christman?

Investigations have been conducted but despite their efforts, Janett’s killer has not been found. One Robert Mueller who was friends with Ed Romack since high school was a suspect. Ed Romack testified that Robert Mueller once mentioned that he liked Janett.

However, Robert Mueller was freed after going through a lie detector test. Janett took her final breath on 18 March 1950, at age 13, in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, USA.
