Hugh Jackman and his two brothers, Ralph Jackman, and Ian Jackman remained in Australia with their father Christopher John Jackman, who raised them. Hugh has often praised his father for raising him and his siblings very well. He once mentioned that:

“I stayed in Australia with my father and two brothers, and had a tough time for a while. But, you know, I had a very good father who was always there for us and I could never even imagine what it must have been like to raise kids on his own the way he did for many years. I don’t think I could have done that. You need an iron will and I never heard him complain about himself or his lot in life.”

In an interview with Oprah, Hugh said: I had a fairly enlightened dad, though if you looked at his résumé, it might not seem that way. He was a chartered accountant for Price Waterhouse. He was strict, and we had a very ordered life. To this day, I am the least materialistic person I know, because my father didn’t raise me to just go out and buy this or that car.’

‘The only reason I wanted to make money as an actor was because I’m passionate about food! But as disciplined as my father was with money, he would never try to save a dime on education. He loved being an accountant. He’d tell me, “You’ve got to love what you do because it’s going to take a lot of your effort and time.” He had only one reservation about my being an actor. He said, “I think you’re too thin-skinned.” And I am fairly thin-skinned.’

Grace McNeil was suffering from undiagnosed postnatal depression at the time she left her boys with her ex-husband Christopher. “The thing I never felt – and I know this might sound strange – I never felt that my mum didn’t love me. I’ve spoken about it at length with her since and I know she was struggling. She was in hospital after I was born, suffering from post-natal depression. There wasn’t a support network for her here,” he said.

Hugh Jackman has publicly spoken about his strained relationship with his mother in the past. He was at the age of eight at the time his mother left. He has described that experience as traumatic. He said as he recalled “the morning she left.” He said:

The next day there was a telegram from England. Mum was there. And then that was it. Dad used to pray every night that mum would come back.”

Hugh Jackman and his mother Grace McNeil have reconciled and made peace. Hugh often shares posts of his mother. In an interview with the Sun, Hugh said: “As I grew older I gained an understanding of why Mum did leave. I am 43 now and we have definitely made our peace, which is important.
