Dean Martin’s first wife, Elizabeth Anne McDonald, tried by all accounts to be a good wife to her husband and a good mother to their 4 children, but her efforts were ultimately undone by her Alcoholism according to reports. It is unclear if her alcoholism led to the failure of their marriage, or whether the singer’s infidelities led to her alcoholism.

After seven years together, they called their marriage a quit in 1949. Dean Martin gained custody of their children; Elizabeth Anne McDonald went totally out of the picture but was in San Francisco. Dean Martin moved on very quickly and married Dorothy Jean “Jeanne” Biegger. Their marriage lasted 24 years before they ended it and produced 3 children. Less than a month after his second marriage came to an end, Martin married Catherine Hawn.

Elizabeth MacDonald’s ex-husband a heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993 and was told that he would require surgery to prolong his life, but he rejected it. The entertainer retired from public life in early 1995 and died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on Christmas Day, 1995, at age 78.

In his honorThe lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed. Martin was interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. The crypt features the epitaph “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime”, the title of his signature song.

Dean Martin’s first wife, Elizabeth Anne McDonald passed away on July 7, 1989, at her home in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Funeral services were held in California. The cause of her death was not made public by the family.

After her body was cremated, the ashes were scattered over the San Francisco Bay. Although Elizabeth Anne McDonald was cremated, there is a Find A Grave memorial in her honor. Elizabeth MacDonald was survived by her four children, Craig, Claudia, Gail, and Dina; and four sisters.
