Danny Boy Trejo’s father Danny Trejo has overcome his drug addictions and has been sober for more than 50 years. According to his Wikipedia page, he was using marijuana, heroin, and cocaine by ages 8, and 12. It was his uncle who introduced him to all three drugs and was responsible for him overdosing on his first heroin fix. At age seven, he took part in his first drug deal.

In an interview with Prison Legal News, he said: “My uncle turned me on to grass when I was eight years old. And it’s funny, when I say that to like a normal citizen they’re kind of appalled. But I say that to a convict, they say okay we know.” He added: “He got me loaded. I threatened to snitch on him if he didn’t give me a fix, I was about 12. And from then on it was just whatever drugs were available.”

When asked when he first got into prison, Danny Trejo said: “I went to camp in ‘59, I got out of there and I went to prison and I went back in ‘62, I got out and I went to the joint in ‘65.” He eventually became a member of a 12-step program and began a life of sobriety. He even became a substance abuse counselor.
