His parents are Avie Lee Caroline (née Owens; 1923–2003) and Robert Lee Parton Sr. (1921–2000). His mother was a housewife while his father was a tobacco farmer who did construction jobs on the side.
Coy Denver Parton is one of the 12 children of his parents. He was an illiterate but his daughter Dolly often said that her father was one of the smartest people she had ever known in regards to business and making a profit.

I absorbed everything. … And then when I learned to play that little guitar, my heart was always heavy from hearing all these songs, so that was how I channeled all those feelings, whether they were happy or whether they were sad.”
