Bruno Paul Diamond’s father John was raised in a secular Jewish household as the son of a scientist and a fashion designer. He grew raised in Upper Clapton and Woodford Green, then went to City of London School and Trent Park College of Education, which is now part of Middlesex University, to study as an English teacher. Later, he taught at Dalston Mount Comprehensive, an all-girls secondary school in Hackney, London, before turning to journalism.
He worked as a broadcaster on BBC radio and television and published a regular piece for the Saturday edition of The Times called “Something for the Weekend” from 1992 onwards. When they were both writing for The Sunday Times, he met his second wife, Nigella Lawson. In 1992, they married in Venice and had two children.
Bruno Paul Diamond’s father was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1997. In his newspaper column, he talked about his experiences with cancer, for which he received a What The Papers Say award. For his book C: Because Cowards Get Cancer Too…., he was nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize in 1999. Inside Story shot a BBC documentary following him through therapy and capturing his dissatisfaction with his speech issues following throat and subsequently tongue surgery.
