Anthony was adopted by Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay, On August 26, 1928, Stanwyck married her Burlesque co-star Frank Fay. She and Fay later claimed that they had disliked each other at first, but became close after Cherryman’s death.
His mother, Stanwyck, was unable to have children, and one biographer claims that the cause of her infertility was a botched abortion when she was 15 years old, which resulted in complications. On December 5, 1932, after relocating to Hollywood, the couple adopted a ten-month-old son. They named him Dion, but later changed it to Anthony Dion, nicknamed Tony.
Anthony Dion’s parents had a troubled marriage- Fay’s successful Broadway career did not translate to the big screen, whereas Stanwyck rose to stardom in Hollywood. Fay was said to be physically abusive to Stanwyck, especially when he was drunk. Her stormy, seven-year marriage to Frank Fay finally ended after a drunken brawl, during which he tossed their adopted son, Dion, into the swimming pool.
The couple called their marriage a quit on December 30, 1935. Stanwyck won custody of their son, Dion, whom they say she raised with a strict authoritarian hand and demanding expectations. Stanwyck and her son Anthony Dion Fay became estranged after his childhood, meeting only a few times after he became an adult. The rift never healed, the child whom she had adopted in infancy “resembled her in just one respect: both were, effectively, orphans.”
In 1957, Anthony Dion Fay was arrested for trying to sell lewd pictures while waiting to cash his unemployment check. When questioned by the press about his famous mother, he replied, “We don’t speak.” He and Stanwyck only saw each other a few times after their falling out.
Anthony’s mother Stanwyck retirement years were active, with charity work outside the limelight. In 1981, in her home in the exclusive Trousdale section of Beverly Hills, she was awakened during the night by an intruder who struck her on the head with his flashlight, forced her into a closet and absconded with $40,000 in jewels.
Stanwyck inhaled special-effects smoke on the set of The Thorn Birds in 1982, which may have caused her to contract bronchitis, which was exacerbated by her cigarette smoking habit. She started smoking at the age of nine and quit four years before her death.
Anthony Dion Fay’s mother died of congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on January 20, 1990, at the age of 82, at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. She had stated that she did not want a funeral service. Her ashes were scattered from a helicopter over Lone Pine, California, where she had made some of her Western films, in accordance with her wishes.
